    What Is Sidamo Green Coffee?

Sidamo (also written Sidama) grows at 1,550–2,200 metres in the Sidama zone of southern Ethiopia. It shares some geographic overlap with Yirgacheffe — Yirgacheffe is historically a sub-region within the broader Sidama zone, though the two are now marketed as distinct origins.

The Sidama zone officially became a separate regional state in 2019, and its coffees are increasingly sold as "Sidama" rather than "Sidamo" in origin-focused markets. Both spellings refer to the same region — clarify with your buyers which labelling they prefer.

    Cup Profile by Processing Method

    Washed

Clean, balanced cups with crisp citrus acidity, mild honey sweetness, and a smooth, medium body. Approachable Ethiopian character without the intensity of Yirgacheffe florals — works for filter and blends.

    Natural

Pronounced berry and wine character — blackcurrant, stone fruit, fuller, sweeter body. The longer harvest window (Oct–Feb) means natural Sidamo lots can be sourced across an extended period.

Why Buyers Choose Sidamo for Blends

Sidamo Grade 2 is a common choice for importers building commercial-specialty blends. The SCA 80–84 range delivers a solid specialty cup at a lower price point than Grade 1, with the natural Ethiopian character that makes Ethiopian coffees distinctive in blends.

Grade 2 Sidamo natural lots are particularly useful for espresso blends where body and fruit sweetness are priorities, and price consistency across seasons matters.

    Common Questions

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Sidamo Grade 1 and Grade 2?

Grade 1 Sidamo scores SCA 85–88 with 0–3 defects per 300g. Grade 2 scores SCA 80–84 with 4–12 defects. Both are specialty grade. Grade 2 is commonly used for commercial-specialty blends where a lower price point is needed.

Is Sidamo the same as Sidama?

Yes. Sidama is the more accurate spelling following the region's status as a separate Ethiopian regional state from 2019. Sidamo is the older, more internationally recognised name. The coffee comes from the same geographic area.

    Is Sidamo washed or natural?

Both processing methods are available. Washed Sidamo produces a clean, citrus-forward cup. Natural Sidamo produces berry and wine character. Contact us with your processing preference and we will confirm availability.

What is the minimum order for Sidamo green coffee beans?

The minimum order is 10 bags (600kg) for both Grade 1 and Grade 2 Sidamo.

Is Sidamo green coffee EUDR compliant?

We provide traceability documentation to washing station level with GPS coordinates for EU buyers. Contact us to confirm current EUDR documentation for your specific requirements.

How does Sidamo compare to Yirgacheffe for blend use?

Sidamo Grade 2 natural is a common blend component because it delivers Ethiopian fruit character at a more accessible price point than Yirgacheffe Grade 1. Sidamo washed is also a cleaner, more neutral base for blends than Guji naturals.
